Tip: If your umbrellas are sliding around too much on your string, feel free to tie a tiny knot on either side of your umbrella to keep it in place.Īfter one umbrella, add a few more pom poms to your garland, and then repeat with another umbrella. (This will allow your umbrellas to float upright on your string, so try to do this as evenly as possible!) Facilities include bathhouses, fresh-water solar rinse-off showers, and charcoal grills. Dogs must be well-behaved, kept on a leash no longer than 4 feet in length, cleaned up after at all times, and never left unattended in public places. Open the umbrella and poke your needle through the top, on one side. Slide the pom pom to the bottom of your twine, and repeat with 3 more pom poms, leaving about an inch of space between each one.Īfter you’ve threaded a few pom poms, move on to your first umbrella. Once your needle is threaded, put the point of your needle through your first pom pom and pull it through. Make sure not to tie any knots in your twine so that it glides easily through the pom poms! Pro Tips: We recommend using an embroidery needle, as the opening is larger and will make threading your twine much easier. Put the end of your twine through the eye of the needle, and pull the needle down just the beginning of your twine, until you have about a three-inch tail. As a follow-up, Dan D’Agostino has now brought many of these advances to the new D’Agostino Momentum HD Pre-amplifier. We fell in love with the D’Agostino Momentum Phono with its new input stage and ultra-quiet circuitry. Everyone loves turning that incredibly sexy volume knob, but that’s only the beginning of a design that we called an “end game product.” We felt the Prisma towered over most preamplifiers and blew such a hole in our PTA awards system that we had to invent a new one, the Summit Award, to put a spotlight on its excellence. (The Preos D adds a DAC and a phono pre.) The volume control is “fabulous,” the build quality is exquisite, and the sound is well, nothing, as a preamp should be. This might be the finest preamplifier we’ve ever used, solid-state or tubed, although we spent most of our time with the original Preos. Mactone amps have been made by the same gentleman in Japan since 1964, and the XX-7000 screams “bespoke” and “pride of ownership is off the charts.” No remote control–this is every bit a classic preamp design, but with a sound that suggests both vintage and state of the art. Maybe the most beautiful preamp we’ve seen, and its sound is equally sublime. With the matching Vitus RS101 power amplifier, we found that the RL102 delivered a “highly three-dimensional and fully fleshed-out soundstage.” Dig a little deeper and you’ll find a preamp that is extremely versatile. The RL102 is “a model of European simplicity and straight-forward sensibility,” meaning that it is no-nonsense in its approach. Definitely in consideration for being one of the best preamplifiers on the market regardless of topology. Sporting one of the largest displays we’ve seen on an audio product-you can easily read everything from 20 feet away-the Christine was a synergistic match with the Class-D Merrill Element 118 monoblocks and forced us to reconsider our bias against Class-D amplifier designs. Yes, you can get it with a fabulous phono stage as well. Perhaps that’s because of its super low noise floor, its hefty power supply or even its point-to-point wiring, but let’s face it-this preamp is filled with some of the finest parts money can buy such as Dueland caps and a tube-rectified choke input filter PSU. We’ve declared this the “best tubed preamplifier we’ve heard,” and we’ve heard a few. Still, this is a minimalist preamp in the finest sense-short signal paths, the best parts quality and a slick attenuator that makes us giggle with joy.īorderPatrol Control Unit EXT-1 ($12,250 USD) The new Control 2 is a bit more fancy-the automatic input selector, powered by 12V triggers, is now replaced with a more traditional push-button selector, and the remote control controls more than volume trim. The original Control preamp was as streamlined as it gets-there was only one knob on the front of the thing, and it was the attenuator. The single-stage volume control is a dream, by the way. Features are abundant, and yet the XP-12 is still incredibly easy to set-up and use. Like the matching XP-17 phono preamp, the XP-12 is incredibly neutral and does an impossibly great job at allowing you to hear what everything else in your system is doing. It even has a headphone amplifier, and if you know LTA you know it’s gotta be special. The MicroZOTL offers push-pull Class A operation and can be considered as a truly full-featured preamplifier. We get a tad giddy whenever we use LTA amps-these David Berning designs, based on his ZOTL topology, offer such a pure and beautiful window into the music. Linear Tube Audio MicroZOTL Preamplifier ($4,450 USD) Passives aren’t for everyone, but if you’re one of those people who are going “DAC direct” you might want to spend a few hundred bucks to get clean, clear sound-and all without a power cord. We described this small passive unit as a “volume control in a box,” and were amazed when it kicked the butt of a few very expensive preamplifiers. In my view, this is the quintessential perfect film guaranteed to take away any pain of what ails you. As it’s a film whose lines my wife and I quote frequently (“to blave” when arguing about what the toddler garbled or “have fun storming the castle” when running errands) and for which we’ve purchased artwork inspired by to decorate our home, anything I could potentially write about The Princess Bride is biased based on decades of love and appreciation. For that brief period, he was locked in enough to be wary and show concern for Buttercup’s fate. He’s not ready for it and he may never be, but seeing the way he bought into Reiner’s illusion confirms that some films transcend generations in capturing imaginations. (Much like the grandson, he’d rather be playing video games than watching the film.) This was the first attempt at screening the film for him and it was wild watching the film through his experience, so ingrained it is into my own. Sadly, though after he asked many questions about the duel between Inigo (Mandy Patinkin) and Wesley, as well as inquired about Fezzik (André the Giant), once given the chance to flee, he did. Much like a certain sick grandchild (Fred Savage), the romance storyline was not his thing, nor was the kissing, but when I tell you he curled up to me as the eel bared down on Buttercup just as Grandpa (Peter Falk) stopped the story to see if his grandson was ok, I let out a very audible laugh at the similarity. In preparation for this home release review, I asked my now-eight year old to sit with me, to give it 30-minute minimum (I sneaked in an extra 15 by waiting until just before the Fire Swamp as a natural stop) to see what he thought. With her fate surely sealed, what hope is there to be found, except, perhaps, in a masked man hot on the bandits’ heels, hunting for Buttercup for reasons all his own. To make matters worse, three bandits interrupt her regular ride in order to kidnap her and use her to incite a war between Florin and the neighboring country of Guilder. However, five years later, Buttercup was selected by Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) to be his bride, though she did not give up on her promise to Wesley. But, after learning that Wesley’s ship was taken by the Dread Pirate Roberts, knowing that they take no prisoners, she hardened her heart in her grief. In the land of Florin lives a young woman named Buttercup (Robin Wright) who lives alone on her farm, save for the farmhand she rescued, whom she calls “farm boy.” This boy, Wesley (Elwes), responds to every request with three words, “As you wish.” After some time, she realized that what he meant was, “I love you,” and, after the two united, Wesley decided to leave in order to make his fortune in order to give them both a better life. L-R: Robin Wright as Buttercup and Cary Elwes as Westley in THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Now, The Criterion Collection offers a brand-new remaster of Reiner’s film, upgrading their 2018 4K HD remaster to a 4K UHD, complete with all the previously available materials and upgraded packaging. When the world locked down in 2020, someone decided to reenact the film using short clips of various actors playing overlapping parts, shot entirely in their own homes, done to bring a little light into our global darkness. It’s the definition of “lightning in a bottle,” with the characters perfectly cast, the story adapted to suit the medium, the production and costuming immaculate, and the themes as relevant in the release as they are now. There are few films as universally beloved as Rob Reiner’s 1987 adaptation of William Goldman’s novel The Princess Bride. She has also seen her personal life -especially her friendship with Lemonheads leader Evan Dando -scrutinized in public, a cause of considerable frustration to her in spite of her declaration to Spin ’s Rob Sheffield that “I get pleasure in being misrepresented. Writing songs “about not being able to deal with life, ” as she described it to Robbins, Hatfield has moved from a stint on the indie scene with Boston ’s Blake Babies to a burgeoning solo career thanks to the success of her second solo album, Become What You Are. “That ’s the only thing I stand by: independence, ” she proclaimed in Newsweek, and in a Rolling Stone interview she declared, “I ’m not doing this to advance the cause of women. Moreover, Hatfield has refused to align herself with any particular “school, ” calling herself an individualist. She also poses for magazine fashion supplements and attacks her guitar with great ferocity, playing havoc with preconceived ideas about gender in rock. At once confident and vulnerable, possessed of a “wispy voice ” -according to Ira Robbins of Musician -and given to writing ebullient pop melodies, Hatfield sings sharp-edged, often despairing lyrics. Such a description aptly conveys the contradictions Hatfield seems to embody. Juliana Hatfield has a “gift for making lyrical venom sound like lullabies, ” according to an Alternative Press writer. I have rarely had a reception professional take better care of me, despite a high occupancy rate. When I mentioned that I was meeting a friend the next morning and needed a breakfast restaurant suggestion, she suggested that since the food is good at Indigo, I invite her to dine with me, giving me a coupon for the friend, who was impressed. She greeted me as a frequent IHG customer and went beyond the normal good customer care. Even more helpful was Dora at the front desk. All I had to do was suggest a bit of fruit on my plate and voila it was there. But the lady who served breakfast all by herself one day was superb. The bellhops who ran the shuttle were pleasant and helpful as were all staff. But the best part about the Indigo is its staff. It is walking distance to the orange line, coming in from DFW airport, to Nieman Marcus, the historic Majestic theater, and luxury hotels. The property has been recently refurbished for the second time since becoming an Indigo giving the impression of a modern, new property despite its history as the oldest Hilton in big D. I stayed in the Indigo based on a positive experience I had in an Indigo in a NC mountain town and despite high expectations was pleasantly surprised. I typically travel to Dallas three times a year, and I do not want to stay anywhere else from this point forward. They are doing it right at the Hotel Indigo. The valets, the front desk, the shuttle driver, the room service attendant… Everyone made us feel very welcome. And most importantly, I want to add that every single employee that I had any interaction with was helpful, professional, and very friendly. Plenty of storage space, a shelf where you need one, plenty of outlets. Someone put a lot of thought and detail into the design of these rooms. Everything about the room was perfectly laid out. I was told it was a Simmons Premium Pillow Top. The bed was so comfortable, I inquired about the mattress. I don’t typically choose the room service option, but if every hotel was like this one, I certainly would do so. We were rushed for time before our concert started and decided the best option would be ordering room service. Friendly staff, beautiful accommodations, every amenity you could possibly need…the whole thing was incredible. This hotel exceeded all expectations from start to finish.
